About WordPress |
WordPress is PHP and MySQL based content management system also called as "CMS". It is open source and free blogging tool that runs on a web hosting service. WordPress features include a template system and a plugin architecture. As of August 2013 WordPress is used by more than 22% of the top ten million websites. This CMS is the most popular blogging platform in use on the Web and has about more than 60 million websites.
Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little founders of WordPress released it on 27th May, 2003. As of 19th February, 2014, more than 20 million downloads have been done for the latest 3.8 version. WordPress has been released under the GPLv2 [or later] license from the Free Software Foundation.
What is WordPress.org?
This site allows you to download and install a software script called as WordPress. For this purpose you are needed to have a web host who meets all the minimum necessities and a little time. This CMS can be fully customized and used for almost anything. There is one another service called as "WordPress.com" on which you can start with a free and new WordPress based blog in seconds, but it is less flexible and a little bit different than the WordPress you download and install yourself.
Uses of WordPress
WordPress was started as just a blogging platform, but now it has gone far away to be used as full (CMS) "content management system" and much more through the thousands of widgets, themes and plugins. For instance WordPress can now be used as a fully equipped online store for selling goods or services and it has been rightly said that WordPress can be limited only by someone's imagination.
